7. Album review: Lloyd's 'King of Hearts'

Pop & Hiss
The birth certificate of Lloyd, the 24-year-old Atlanta tenor, reads Lloyd Polite Jr. His fourth album, “King of Hearts,” is worthy of his mild surname. Assuredly, there are attempts at the profane. The Andre 3000- and Lil Wayne-aided “...

11. Nicki Minaj red-hot as 'Pink Friday' lands

Nicki Minaj never envisioned herself as hip-hop's reigning "it" girl. The question alone makes her giggle as she offers an answer nowhere near as cocky as her saucy rhymes.
Nicki Minaj never envisioned herself as hip-hop's reigning "it" girl. The question alone makes her giggle as she offers an answer nowhere near as cocky as her saucy rhymes. "When I was growing up I thought I'd be a famous actress," she says. "Acting came...

13. MGMT Friday at the Greek Theatre

Brand X
Brooklyn, N.Y., duo MGMT seemed to come out of nowhere with its 2008 debut, a spacey, electro-fied celebration of youth and revelry. The follow-up album, "Congratulations," was also a surprise, eschewing synthy fun in favor of surf-inspired psychedelia....

15. Review: 'Notorious'

There are many things that can be said about Biggie Smalls, the rapper officially known as the Notorious B.I.G., who was gunned down in a hail of bullets on Wilshire Boulevard in 1997 when he was just 24. But the one that fits best on his massive frame is a slight one: flow. ¶ Flow was there in his rhymes, a hypnotic seduction of words weaving and teasing around you like the perpetual haze trailing from his blunts. It was there in the deep rumble of his voice, in the slow, liquid roll of his body as he moved. And it is there in Jamal Woolard, the young rapper who plays him in "Notorious," a performance that goes a long way toward saving a movie that has fallen obsessively in love with its subject. ¶ Mad, blind love is always a hazard in films that fashion themselves as biographies. No detail of a life too small, no moment left behind. In "Notorious," director George Tillman Jr. and screenwriters Reggie Rock Bythewood and Cheo Hodari Coker have fallen right into the pit alongside so many who have come before them.

17. Checking in on Cindy McCain's lapel pins

CONFESSION: I can't stop staring at Cindy McCain's chest. It's like a Fourth of July fireworks finale with all those sparkly patriotic pins on her lapel. They seem to be breeding like wild hares in her closet too. Every time she appears at a luncheon or a rally, there's yet another crystal-encrusted brooch.

19. Listening with Ludacris: A preview of 'Battle of the Sexes'

Pop & Hiss
If “Battle of the Sexes,” the title of Ludacris’ upcoming album, had been rejected by Def Jam brass, “Ladies Love Luda” might have been an adequate substitute. After all, other than T.I., no other contemporary rapper inspires female ardor quite....

21. M.I.A. can be found in Bed-Stuy (and soon at Coachella)

BY train, the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn is five stops from the suits and ties of Lower Manhattan and 14 stops from the tourists of Times Square. Some of the streets are lined with trees and brownstones, others with abandoned buildings and shady convenience stores.

23. Faith in a comfort zone

Special to The Times
A decade ago, a resolute R&B singer from New Jersey released her debut album on a fledgling music label run by a producer whom she heard would be big. That same year, she met -- and, nine days later, married -- a portly rapper from Brooklyn whom she...
