Opened near Buckroe in 1898 as a 4-room cottage, the Bay Shore Hotel grew to 3 stories and 70 rooms by 1930, when this photo was taken, and became a popular  resort for African-Americans. Among the entertainers who played there were Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.
