3. Tuning up your workout

When I started working out, I had a personal music player the size of a dachshund for exercise motivation. I filled it with Rush and Joe Satriani mix tapes to enhance my workouts. Technology has come a long way since then.

  5. Monsters really rock in 'Too Much Horror Business'

Rock star money buys stuff. Homes, planes, influence. For Kirk Hammett, the longtime guitarist of Metallica, rock star money also bought the horror-movie childhood he never quite had. Around the mid-1980s, as the band started to make a name for itself, Hammett, who grew up in San Francisco obsessed with monster movies and comic books, began collecting the monster movie paraphernalia that he once pined for but could never afford as a child. Newly flush, he began contacting dealers and developing relationships with collectors around the world. And soon he owned many of the same toys and models and masks that he had once ogled in the back pages of the legendary horror fanzine “Famous Monsters of Filmland.” Then he went further: He bought original movie costumes, props, Halloween masks, ultra-rare posters, even the original art that had graced the covers of “Famous Monsters.”

  9. Film review: 'Rise of the Guardians' fails to be a holiday hit

"Rise of the Guardians" is a humdrum animated film that I'm sure is supposed to be the start of a hot new franchise. The premise is that legendary children's characters, often believed to be imaginary, are in fact real and moonlight as superheroes. I can see where that's a good idea on paper and I won't deny that it's easily marketable. But the film lacks good ideas beyond this most basic stage and quickly becomes dull and joyless, at least for adults who reluctantly see it with their kids.

  19. Ozzy Didn't Believe Sabbath's Influence

Ozzy Osbourne didn’t realise Black Sabbath had been such an influence on other bands until he heart Metallica playing his songs – and suspected they were laughing at him.The iconic frontman recalls a moment in 1986 when the thrash giants were supporting him on tour. He tells the Telegraph: “I came past their dressing room, and I had to ask one of their assistants if they were taking the piss out of me, because they were playing Black Sabbath. “For someone to tell you ‘Black Sabbath changed my life’ is a weird thing to get your head round.”But despite the band’s legacy of dark-edged music, Osbourne insists it’s all about having fun to him. “I’ve never wanted to be serious, to have solemn music,” he says. “The way that all that happened with the music and the name and everything, if I remember, is we used to rehearse in a movie theatre. So we decided to write songs inspired by scary movies. “It was all flower-power and love – but for us, living in the industrial town of Birmingham, we liked scary movies.” Osbourne is at work on his first Sabbath album since 1979 alongside bandmate Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and producer Rick Rubin. Drummer Bill Ward failed to reach a contractual agreement and bowed out of the original lineup reunion. He recently stated he’d like to be part of Sabbath’s future.

  21. Local heavy metal scene still snarling after all these years

Something about this time of year always makes my tastes turn to the heavy. On my stereo, Black Sabbath albums shift into heavy rotation. Last night, I watched "Until the Light Takes Us," a film about Norwegian black metal bands.
