It included "Thing Called Love," which Bonnie Raitt subsequently popularized when she included it on her multiple Grammy-winning "Nick of Time" album in 1989.

    Songs about broken vows, impoverished families and impending death aren't supposed to be pretty. Just don't tell Freakwater. Monday at a sold-out Hideout, the locally based band upended convention, filling tales of loss and hardship with gorgeous harmonies and homespun warmth. The alt-country group furthered its nontraditional approach by viewing bleak scenarios as opportunities for subtle humor. Indeed, having spent approximately half of the 90-minute show sharing amusing stories and cracking jokes, Freakwater mainstays Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Irwin might consider appearing on Chicago's famed comedy circuit.
