1. The Who, Queen Rock Olympics Closing Ceremonies

Great Britain had an announcement for the world "We Will Rock You." At the closing ceremony of London's Olympics, organizers dispensed with the history lessons of the opening ceremony for a show that reminded the world of its dominance in popular culture and, once again, sports. The Who, Annie Lennox, and even Queen — the band behind the night's most memorable anthem — showed up for a concert that celebrated Great Britain on top of a giant Union Jack in the middle of Olympic Stadium. The ceremony opened with a celebration of the everyday within the shadow of iconic British symbols. There was a miniature Big Ben — and regular folks dancing in "our house, in the middle of the street," the refrain from the 1982 hit by Madness. There was a replica London Eye – and teens bopping along to Great Britain's latest boyband export, One Direction. Even the world's greatest athletes marched onto the field to "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys, a nod to locals. Around the time George Michael hit the stage, Olympic Stadium turned into a giant rock concert venue. Many of the night's biggest stars were a throwback to eras in the '80s and '90s when Britain produced an inordinate amount of international pop culture. Hits performed by Lennox, George Michael and others, likely unrecognizable to many of the teenage athletes gathered to watch, underscored the staying power of British music from the era.
