1. Gathering of the Vibes 2012: A Recap

For Gathering of the Vibes 2012, I chose to decline all the media hook-ups and luxuries. No laptop. No power outlets. No VIP tent with couches. No pass for entry into the photo pit in front of the stage. No isolated, backstage, extra-clean Port-O-Pottys. I was fully embedded, camping in mud along with every other non-media-affiliated camper. It’s only fair.

  3. Primus Heads to Bridgeport on July 21 to Lead the Vibes Brigade

One of the greatest moments in bassist Les Claypool’s career came only a few months ago, at a fundraiser for Barack Obama. “It was me, Booker T. Jones and Charlie Musselwhite,” Claypool told me over the phone. “I played ‘Green Onions’ with Booker T. while the President was jogging into the room.” The 50-year-old song was one he’d performed with cover bands at biker bars, close to where he grew up in El Sobrante, Calif. “And now I’m playing it as the President is walking into a room.” As Obama was leaving, the trio kicked off “Time is Tight,” another MGs classic. “And there’s Al Green air-bassing and making a goofy face right in front of me. It was fucking surreal.”

  9. Summer Festivals 2012: Gathering of the Vibes at Seaside Park in Bridgeport

Vibes will continue to honor the legacy of the Grateful Dead this year by featuring the individual bands of four ex-members: Phil Lesh and Friends, Bob Weir & Bruce Hornsby with Branford Marsalis, the Mickey Hart Band and 7 Walkers with Bill Kreutzmann. (Furthur is still together, but after playing Bridgeport a couple years in a row, they're mixing up their schedule a bit and returning to the Northeast later in the summer.) Primus popped its Vibes cherry in 2010, and will be back this year to reprise their weirdness on a grand scale one more time. Newcomers the Avett Brothers will represent the latest wave of Americana sweeping the mainstream, and Connecticut's own adorable husband and wife duo Mates of State will make their first appearance at the festival this year too. Last year was the hottest Vibes weekend on record, so bring your sunscreen and stay hydrated. Dance your ass off on the Silent Disco at the beach at 2 a.m. if you so desire. Ride the Ferris wheel. Sit beside P.T. Barnum's regal seated statue overlooking Long Island Sound and just take it all in. It's one of the premier music festivals in the whole country, and it's happening right here in Bridgeport. To miss out on all the fun would be just plain silly.

  13. moe. again kicks off summer concert season

Since 2001, the unofficial kickoff of the summer concert season in the Chicago area has been the Summer Camp Music Festival at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, Ill. In each of those 11 years, including this weekend, the headliner has been moe., a quintet from upstate New York that doesn’t discriminate against any musical genre.

  15. More Good Vibes at Seaside Park

We already knew that Gathering of the Vibes was going to feature ex-Grateful Dead members. But now the official lineup has been announced and the exact (re)incarnations are no longer a mystery. There's no Furthur or Rhythm Devils as there had been the past two years. This time we're getting each ex-Dead member with his own respective project: Phil Lesh and Friends (for the first time since 2008), Bob Weir and Bruce Hornsby with Branford Marsalis (that should be interesting), Mickey Hart Band (who are also playing the Ridgefield Playhouse on Friday, April 13) and 7 Walkers (featuring the other drummer, Bill Kreutzmann). Of course, there will probably be some cross pollination depending on how schedules align.

  21. Movie review: 'Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone'

Early in Laurence Fishburne's narration for the documentary "Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone," it is posited that the band could have come together only in Los Angeles, not least because when they first united in the early 1980s, the then-teenage members were mostly being bused to school from South Central to the San Fernando Valley.
