5. SXSW 2013: Nick Cave goes dark, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Paramore shine

AUSTIN, Texas -- There's no shortage of grizzled veterans at South by Southwest this year, from Depeche Mode to Iggy and the Stooges to Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, the last of whom opened NPR Music's jam-packed showcase Wednesday night at Stubb's. For a good 45 minutes, in fact, Cave and his not-so-merry men were playing at the same time as the Stooges, right across Red River Street at the Mohawk. Alas, an old-dude bro-down never took place. Maybe next year.

  7. Interview: Imagine Dragons singer savors flight on the wings of success

Midway through my conversation with Imagine Dragons lead singer Dan Reynolds and his wife, Aja Volkman, in Nellcote's private dining area last week, Volkman — whose band, Nico Vega, opened for Imagine Dragons earlier that night at the House of Blues — lifted up a blanket to reveal the couple's 7-month-old daughter, Arrow Eve. She had been sleeping next to Volkman in the booth the entire time.

  9. Weekend Preview: Miami Heat's Mario Chalmers to host Fort Lauderdale fundraiser Saturday

Whether in a cartoony red-and-blue Super Mario costume bouncing around the Miami Heat’s “Harlem Shake” video or in his work clothes stepping in for a cramping LeBron James as a savior in Game 4 of last year’s NBA Finals, the contributions of Mario Chalmers are too often overlooked.

  11. Ben Harper, Charlie Musselwhite put their stamp on the blues at the Riv

Ben Harper name-checked a list of blues icons such as Skip James and Howlin' Wolf at the end of his concert with harmonica great Charlie Musselwhite at the Riviera Theatre Sunday night, and their influences certainly could be heard during the two-hour show. More notably, with Musselwhite's assistance, Harper put his own stamp on the blues, at once drawing on the genre's traditions and expanding on them.

  13. Top weekend show: Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite at Riviera

Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite: The pairing of Harper’s guitar and vocals with Musselwhite’s harp proves inspired on “Get Up!” (Concord/Stax). Harper sounds rougher and rootsier than he has in years, while Musselwhite...

  21. Dixie Chick Uncertain About Return To Country

Natalie Maines will reunite with The Dixie Chicks to perform at Canadian country music festival Calgary Stampede this summer. CMT caught up with Natalie recently to ask her how she’s feeling about country music, after years of tension with some of the genre’s fans. “You know what? It’s, it’s kinda like going back to your abusive husband. I’m just not feeling it I’m sorry.” Natalie plans to release a solo album, co-produced by singer-songwriter Ben Harper. The title track, “Mother,” is a Pink Floyd cover and sets the tone for what Natalie says is something very different from her Chicks music. Look for that one to hit stores on May 7th.
