Long Point Park: Waterfront campsites circle island( PHOTO BY BOB ROUNTREE )
About 1.5 miles north of Sebastian Inlet, there's a little-known 84.5-acre Brevard County park that features an island ringed by waterfront campsites, directly on the Indian River and cradled in one of the east coast's most prolific shelfish beds.
Of course, the oyster bars and clam beds also attract a wide variety of fish, who file endlessly in and out of the inlet, making fishing great sport and a featured attraction of this unique island setting. Be sure to check local regulations on what beds are open for clamming, and respect the marked leaseholds where shellfish farmers make their living.
The park has a boat ramp for both day use and campers, as well as a fishing dock, and you can pull your boats right up your campsite.
The 113 waterfront campsites accommodate RV's and tent camping with water and electric hookups. On the interior of the island, there are 15 improved sites with full hookups, as well as another 26 semi-improved.
There's also a nice little cafe on A1A at the turnoff for Long Point Park. Next door, there's a small store for camping and fishing supplies.
