1. A little Jack White with your burger?

Is a hyper-curated playlist the new house-made charcuterie? Whether a restaurant's playing Lady Gaga or Langhorne Slim says as much about the place as its Mason jar drinking glasses or farm-to-table pickle plate. And in an era when even Facebook tracks one's music choices, restaurants are paying more attention than ever to what goes with the hickory-roasted carrots — not just the za'tar-laced crème fraîche but, say, also Lambchop (the band, not the meat).

  11. Beach Boys ready for harmonic convergence on tour, album

The sands of time can be cruel, sure, but sometimes they settle for wryly ironic. After years apart, the three surviving founding members of the Beach Boys will launch a 50-date, 50th anniversary tour in April and at every show they will ask the musical question, "Wouldn't it be nice if we were older?"

  13. For politically aware songs, the '00s were all for naught

The '60s gave us "Blowin' in the Wind," folk-poet Bob Dylan's challenge to the brutal status quo. The '70s served up Neil Young's "Ohio," an anthem of generational rage against the military-industrial machine. The '80s laid down "The Message," Grandmaster Flash's hip-hop jeremiad about the vicious cycle of race-based poverty. The '90s broke loose with Rage Against the Machine's "Bulls on Parade," a rap-rock rant targeting corporate greed and cultural imperialism.

It's been almost five months since 23-year-old British soul singer Adele, who's up for six Grammys, including album, record and song of the year, fell quiet due to a vocal cord hemorrhage in early October. At the time, she was forced to cancel a 10-date sold-out U.S. tour, just as her sophomore album "21" was well on its way to becoming the top-selling album of 2011, having never left the Top 10 on the U.S. pop charts since its February release.
