3. Pat Metheny Unity Band Performs at the Jorgensen in Storrs on Oct. 13

Guitarist Pat Metheny is at the top of his game. For 30 years straight, he's been touring, playing well over a hundred shows a year. Some of his recent projects, like his automated orchestra adventure, weren't popular with critics, perhaps. But here's a musician who's constantly striving to move forward, to keep himself interested, whether it's putting together new bands — like this one, with saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist Ben Williams and drummer Antonio Sanchez — or venturing out into full-on New Age territory, as on his last album, the baritone guitar-led What It's All About. Potter, Metheny said, rivals former collaborators Gary Burton and Ornette Coleman in terms of the seemingly bottomless depths of his well of ideas. This new band churns and flows, looks forward and reaches back, and never seems to rest easy. That just wouldn't be Metheny. Catch this modern master in a great-sounding room with a terrific band.
