3. Arlo Guthrie is performing to honor dad Woody Guthrie's legacy

When Arlo Guthrie was a boy, he sat in the backyard with the guitar he'd gotten for his fifth birthday and listened to his father, Woody, teach him "This Land Is Your Land." The verses decrying hunger and espousing equality didn't strike Arlo as political back then.

  7. Richie Havens' creative, political spirit never wavered

People who experienced Woodstock through the lens of the 1970 documentary film "Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music" can describe every contour of Richie Havens' face. With focused eyes and a scraggly beard, the singer, songwriter, guitarist and activist, who died on Monday at age 72, is ingrained into a generation's memory. In the film and on record, you can hear the mantra that he offered echo across Max Yasgur's farm, and that message has resonated over the years to become one of Woodstock's archetypal performances.

  13. 'New' Jimi Hendrix album, 'People, Hell and Angels,' surfaces

There’s been no shortage of posthumous Jimi Hendrix releases since the groundbreaking electric guitarist, singer and songwriter died at age 27 in 1970: Only three Hendrix albums charted during his lifetime, while more than three dozen released after his death have made it to the Billboard 200 Albums chart.

  17. Fashion Diary: Tribal influences for fall

Much of what's out there for fall looks like it could have been ripped from the pages of Cowboys and Indians magazine: arrow print maxi-skirts, blanket-stripe ponchos, suede jackets with swinging fringe, cowboy booties and T-shirts with more Navajo patterns than Ralph Lauren's RRL ranch.

  19. The Reading Life: Ellen Willis, rocking the rock music boat

I've long considered Ellen Willis something of a hero. I hope I live longer than she did (Willis died in 2006, at 64), but otherwise, it's an exemplary life. She was the first pop music critic of the New Yorker, writing 56 pieces for the magazine from 1968 to 1975 that trace her relationship with "music that boldly and aggressively laid out what the singer wanted, loved, hated ... [and] challenged me to do the same."
