Peter Capaldi: The Doctor who is almost in
Aug. 6, 2013

On Sunday night, when Scottish-born actor Peter Capaldi was revealed to be taking over the magic screwdriver to portray Doctor Who in the cultishly popular BBC sci-fi series of the same name, many American fans greeted the news with some confusion.
There is a new Doctor nearly in town: The 55-year-old Scots actor Peter Capaldi, best known this side of the Atlantic for Armando Iannucci’s BBC series “The Thick of It” (loosely the model for HBO’s “Veep”) and film spinoff “In the Loop,” and, going back some, for Bill Forsyth’s “Local Hero,” has been named as the next star of “Doctor Who,” succeeding current Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith.
Peter Capaldi has just landed in New York, the fifth stop in a worldwide tour promoting the new season of “Doctor Who” that began in the United Kingdom, continued with visits to South Korea and Australia and now, after a 22-hour flight that crossed the international dateline, has descended on midtown Manhattan.
