5. Ving Rhames' mission possible: selling his Brentwood home

In an indelible award-show moment, best-actor winner Ving Rhames gave his Golden Globe to fellow nominee Jack Lemmon in 1998, saying: "I feel that being an artist is about giving, and I'd like to give this to you." There was nary a dry eye in the house, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. later made a duplicate award for Rhames. (Sorry, Sally. While we may really, really like you, this guy is a class act.)

11. 'The Matador'

Times Staff Writer
In "The Matador," a delightfully sly diversion, Pierce Brosnan breaks the mold and turns in what might be considered the performance of his career, the kind of witty, relaxed star portrayal that recalls those of Cary Grant and other Golden Era legends....

15. Amanda Seyfried struts her singing stuff in 'Mamma Mia!'

IN THE HBO series "Big Love," Amanda Seyfried plays the eldest daughter in a polygamist family of one husband and three wives. In the lavish new musical "Mamma Mia!," based on the long-running Broadway hit, she plays the only daughter of one mother and one of three boyfriends. ¶ In the movie that features the music of '70s band ABBA as prominently as any of its stars, Seyfried plays Sophie, the daughter of single mom Donna (Meryl Streep), who operates a small hotel on a beautiful Greek island. For Sophie's wedding, Donna invites her BFFs (Christine Baranski, Julie Walters) who were the backup singers of her old group, Donna and the Dynamos. Meanwhile, Sophie secretly invites the three guys (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard) who may or may not be her father.

17. 'Mamma Mia!' dances into theaters

MY 9-YEAR-OLD son asked me the other morning why I was dancing around the breakfast table singing "Take a Chance on Me." I don't usually sing in the morning. I definitely don't dance. And I didn't know I knew any ABBA songs (I've never actually bought an album), but there they were -- "S.O.S," "Dancing Queen" and "Mamma Mia" -- bouncing around in my subconscious, like unmoored neurons, suddenly revitalized by an infusion of "Mamma Mia!," the big-screen adaptation of the musical, which I'd seen the night before.

19. British comedian Russell Brand tries to conquer America

Clad head to toe in skin-tight Johnny Cash black, Russell Brand mounted the stage at Hollywood's venerable rock venue the Roxy Theatre on a recent Sunday looking every inch the louche, preening British rock star of archetype. His haystack of "Edward Scissorhands"-esque hair: impressively vertical. His winkle-picker boots: pointy and sharp. Brand's shirt was unbuttoned nearly to his waist, revealing a cluster of silver Gypsy medallions as he looked up to face the capacity crowd.
