1. Critic's Notebook: When going from stage to screen, things change in between

The art of adaptation, as the rash of movies derived from plays this season attests, is never easy. The best artistic looters of all time — Shakespeare, the Greek tragedians — recognized that independent vision is everything. Borrowing didn't inhibit them in least. Their goal, of course, wasn't to duplicate but to create something autonomous. Heck, Shakespeare wasn't beyond taking a freehand with history itself.

3. Movie review: 'War Horse' is the purest sort of love story

"War Horse," Steven Spielberg's epic family drama about the enduring connection between a boy and his horse and the Great War that tears them apart, has the sweep of a classic John Ford movie, the sentiment of Frank Capra and a spirited steed named Joey who will steal your heart. The film itself, which opens Sunday, is more difficult to love.

5. Born on Broadway isn't a sure pedigree

This fall, theater fans may be in for a little déjà vu: "Carnage," "Ides of March," "A Dangerous Method" and "War Horse" are all films, opening from October through December, that have been adapted from plays. All are also popping up with early buzz, making for an exciting Academy Award season for filmmakers and playwrights alike.

7. Who will be the first guy in America to admit he likes 'Eat Pray Love'?

The Big Picture
I may watch a lot of "SportsCenter," but that doesn't mean I don't like a wonderfully warm 'n' fuzzy women's picture, whether it's a great Lubitsch film like "The Shop Around the Corner" or one of Nora Ephron's cinematic souffles,......

9. Filmmaker and Lincoln Park native Tanya Wexler on her romantic comedy 'Hysteria'

Ideas have a funny way of bubbling to the surface of pop culture. You think something's unique, only to find that somebody else has been working on a similar idea. Not that many years ago, two separate films about Truman Capote were released within a year of each other. Coincidence. Or just look at the current TV season, which includes a pair of competing series based on fairy tale lore. Coincidence.

11. 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen' a pleasant adaptation without much meaning ✭✭ 1/2

Aggressively pleasant, the British comedy "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen"stars Ewan McGregor as Alfred Jones, a tightly wrapped Scottish fisheries expert pulled into a sheik-financed project to introduce salmon fishing to the Yemen Highlands, a long way from the land of plaid.

13. 'War Horse' review: A fairy tale goes to battle, and nobody wins

*1/2 (out of four)
*1/2 (out of four) “War Horse” deserves every award it receives for Best Horse Actor of the year. Otherwise, this long, broadly sentimental drama from Steven Spielberg plays like the pretty movie you feel you’re supposed to like but...

15. Pretty, manipulative 'War Horse' sort of works -- 2 1/2 stars

On stage in London and New York, "War Horse" has found a wide and emotionally drained audience. How could it be otherwise? The horrors of World War I plus the horrors of war as endured by a horse, capped by a ruthlessly effective happy ending: I don't mean to be glib, but that is an awful lot to cry about.

17. Movie Review: Johnny English Reborn

Frankly My Dear - Orlando Sentinel
One thing we can conclude conclusively from Rowan Atkinson's second big screen outing as Johnny English. He would have been a FAR superior revived Inspector Clouseau to Steve Martin's embarrassing take on the guy. But “Johnny English Reborn,”...

19. 'Tis the season: some favorite Christmas-flavored films

Zap2It
With Christmas falling on a Saturday this year, there's one last full week -- well, almost -- before St. Nick makes his annual rounds. Thanks to television, DVD and Blu-ray, there also are chances to give yourself some extra holiday cheer with movies...
