    • Rick Porter chatted with some of the "Modern Family" scribes about the Emmy hopes of the freshman hit as well as the snub of a TV vet: "'Sadly, the unsung hero is Ed O'Neill,' writer/co-exec producer Dan O'Shannon says. 'He's just so great. I think...

    All The Rage

  9. Tastemakers

Think of McFetridge as a goodwill ambassador for skate culture. From
Champion Graphics, his Atwater Village–based studio, the CalArts grad applies the aesthetics of his demimonde to feature films, home decor, even billboards for hegemonic soft drinks. Most remarkable about his style, which favors softly contoured animalistic characters and line-drawn, <i>Sgt. Pepper’s</i>– reminiscent figures, is how well suited it is to clients of every ilk. Champion does the “Live Simply” T-shirt series for Patagonia, a project that might have spiraled into “Life Is Good” pabulum if not for McFetridge’s minimal, winking illustrations. This followed a limited run of lunch boxes for skate-fashion arbiter Stussy, which were immediately snatched up and hawked on eBay.

  11. Oscar nomination breakthroughs: 'Avatar,' Kathryn Bigelow, Lee Daniels ...

    Gold Derby
By reaping Academy Award nominations for best picture, "Avatar" and "District 9" have shattered a strong bias among academy voters. In the past, only two sci-fi films have been nominated for the top Oscars: "Star Wars" (1977) and "E.T." (1982). OK,...

  17. Experience not necessary -- but nice

LONDON &#8212; Although it was the young, up-and-coming designers who made the most noise here this season, plenty of old stalwarts took to the runways, too, including one carpetbagger, Marc Jacobs. He closed out the week Friday night showing his lower-priced Marc by Marc Jacobs line to a star-studded crowd and marking the opening of his first store here, in Mayfair.

  21. 'Juno' set high box office standard for fest fare

FILM festivals are justifiably infamous for gluttonous parties, craven swag suites and break-the-bank bidding wars. But does having played the festivals actually help sell tickets when the movie finally hits theaters? The makers of two movies opening this week -- "<a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/reviews/la-et-young9apr09%2C1%2C492492.story">Young@Heart&rdquo;</a> and "The Visitor" -- pray that the answer is yes.

  23. Marianne Faithfull plays it against type in 'Irina Palm'

MARIANNE Faithfull has lived many lives and barely survived some of them. Plucked from a crowded party in 1964 by the Rolling Stones' manager, who called her an angel with a robust physique, she hit the pop charts with a dulcet version of the Stones' "As Tears Go By" and soon thereafter entered into a very public relationship with Mick Jagger. In the years that followed, she played many parts: muse, junkie, trailblazer, icon. In "Irina Palm," Faithfull tries a new and unexpected role: prude.
