5. Anxious thoughts with Mike Birbiglia, based on a true story

The TBS Just for Laughs comedy festival last summer had many pleasures. But one of its disappointments was the cancellation — or, as it turns out, the postponement — of "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend," the highly regarded solo show by Mike Birbiglia. The piece of comedy theater ran for four months at the Barrow Street Theater off-Broadway, where it was presented by Nathan Lane, and garnered strong reviews and awards.

  7. Bring in Obama the Hulk

It's hard to say which is more cringe-worthy: President Barack Obama's debate performance last week or his efforts to control the damage by poking fun at himself. In Los Angeles on Sunday night, Obama recognized Stevie Wonder and Katy Perry as "incredible...

  9. Live lit is the new performance art of the moment

Without a doubt, Chicago is the biological parent of the spoken word. The city might laud and favor improv and sketch comedy out of all its performance art children, but there's an even younger sibling that's growing up--fast.

  21. Sleepwalk With Me

I enjoyed the fact that as a lover of stand-up comedy, I got to see this autobiographical story about a comedian I didn’t know (Mike Birbiglia, who wrote/directed/stars). He wrote this as an off-Broadway play, and it translates nicely to the big screen. It has some problems with the pacing, but it works. That’s because Birbiglia is a likable and neurotic character that’s so Woody Allenish.
