5. Review: 'RuPaul's Drag Race' on Logo

RuPaul, the 6-foot-4 to 6-foot-7 (by his own varying accounts) African American drag queen who sashayed his way into mass consciousness in the 1990s with the club hit "Supermodel" and a VH1 talk show, is back on TV with “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” A reality competition show now about three-quarters through its first cycle on Logo, the LGBT-themed cable net, it aims to discover "America's next drag superstar" -- that is, the next RuPaul. It's a little bit "America's Next Top Model" and a little bit "Project Runway," and like drag itself, parodical without being a joke.

SOON it will be "American Idol" season, that sweet time of year when the world stops to crown a new singing sensation. The naysayers predicted that last year would be the year Americans stopped idolizing, and they were so, so wrong.

PEOPLE endlessly complain that Hollywood is full of dopey, superficial films bereft of anything new to say. And they're right. Anyone looking for art that is edgy or relevant — and inspires comment — is turning to Internet video, which has become the true engine driving our pop culture.

  17. Mark Morris moves with confidence

WITH TV fare that incorporates dance heightening audience awareness of the art form, Mark Morris would seem ideal to star in a reality show. Not only could cameras capture the peripatetic choreographer in rehearsals and on the road with his Mark Morris Dance Group, but they could also be privy to his exploits as opera director, musical conductor, occasional performer and, well, ubiquitous cultural figure and unabashed bon vivant.
