  1. BBC America's 'Copper' takes on New York crime in the 1860s

It seemed like a good idea at the time: Convert an area in Lower Manhattan into a comfortable, racially integrated middle-class neighborhood as the city's population swelled, largely through European immigration.

  3. Perspective: In defense of movies

The week-after-week format of television admittedly builds a depth of character study richer and deeper than most movies are capable of. But would you watch a 13- or 22-hour movie? Huge swathes of recent episodes of "Mad Men" would hit the cutting-room floor in even the most luxuriously paced movie, as the amount of wheel-spinning and narrative churning that can go into a television show would never pass with cinemagoers. 7. HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' sparks demand for men's retro haircut

If the twentysomething guy from the mailroom, your waiter at Mozza and hipster music moguls all seem to be sporting the same haircut — trimmed buzz-cut short on the sides, left long on the top and swept back from the forehead — it's not your imagination. It's "Boardwalk Empire." Or, more precisely, it's a throwback haircut from Prohibition-era America, reintroduced in all its dapper disheveledness by Michael Pitt's James "Jimmy" Darmody character on the Martin Scorsese HBO series.
