  1. The Gold Standard: It's time for Emmy to surprise us

Backstage at the Emmys last year, reporters were squirming &mdash; and not just because of the ill-fitting rental tuxes and too-tight gowns. As "Modern Family" rolled to its third straight Emmy win for comedy series (after earlier pulling in prizes for supporting actor and actress and directing), the usual air of ennui seeped into the press room. <em>Bring us fresh faces! Bring us the excitement of the new! And, while you're at it, three more servings of that delicious chocolate mousse! </em>(There's a reason thoses tuxes pinch at the waistband.)

  3. Review: HBO's 'Family Tree' rooted in warm, goofy eccentricity

  5. Women front 'Nashville' band

Callie Khouri's office is laden with secrets.
Callie Khouri's office is laden with secrets. An emerald-green silk chaise, a Craftsman-style lamp and scattered family heirlooms lend Southern-belle intrigue to the "Nashville" creator's Santa Monica work space. On a shelf rests a silver urn with the...

  7. TV picks: 'Community,' 'Schumer,' 'Maron,' Sagal

<strong>"Community" (NBC, Thursday).</strong> The low-rated and much-beloved comedy about a study group at a community college that is not about a study group at a community college so much as it is a comedy about a comedy about a study group at a community college that is only incidentally a study group &mdash; and so on &mdash; concludes its fourth and possibly last season this week. (The first without cashiered creator and showrunner Dan Harmon, it was delayed from October to February, with the odd effect of airing its Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes in early spring.) At some point in its first year the show jettisoned any pretense of sticking to its premise and embraced its true nature, as an avant-garde meta comedy that, at its best, plays with form and content with an almost childlike glee. (It's actually more of a meta-meta-comedy, which takes note of its own awareness of its awareness &mdash; and so on.) That's a tough thing to pull off week after week, season after season &mdash; after you've proved you can do anything, and have done it again and again, some of the thrill is bound to be lost &mdash; and there were times this year that the show seemed unfocused and obvious. In trying to find a way between invention and feeling, it could grow conventionally, rather than unconventionally, sentimental, or too eager to point out the smart thing it was doing. But it has been finding its feet again: There have been fine, surprising episodes of late &mdash; the puppet musical, the one in real time &mdash; and its ensemble is one of TV's greatest. See it now.

  9. Review: Darcy James Argue's Secret Society taps into Brooklyn

What does Brooklyn sound like? While the fashionably clad, underemployed youth of Lena Dunham's "Girls" may spring to mind given the New York City borough's pop cultural footprint, bandleader Darcy James Argue paints a broader picture of a time and place than any TV series could hope.

  13. On TV, a new breed of Modern Woman

A ruthlessly self-aware political wife reconsidering her choices. A sensual socialite facing down an oppressive age with informed good humor. A group of young women so busy defying social expectations they've forgotten to have any of their own. A working mother with a gift for passionate stillness. A recently recovered drama addict determined to save the world. A bipolar CIA operative, an optimistic bureaucrat, a frightened sex slave turned canny warrior.

  17. Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel on Time 100 list

It's not as juicy as Forbes' annual highest-paid celebrities list, but the Time 100 list of the world's most influential people always provides plenty of conversational fodder, especially when it comes to which TV personalities made the list.
