  1. Critic's picks: It's fun to be stuck in 'The Middle'

"<strong>The Middle"</strong> -- Too long have the hilarious and down-rent relatable Hecks lived in the shadow of their upscale-yet-seeming-unemployed neighbors on"Modern Family." Patricia Heaton's Frankie and Neil Flynn's Mike remind us on a weekly basis that fatigue and bewilderment are the real resting states of family life and their assorted children -- jock Axl (Charlie McDermott), sweet 'n' goofy Sue (Eden Sher) and oddball bookworm Brick (Atticus Shaffer) -- are the anti-Abercrombie kids most of us once were. The season finale will be chock full o' milestones, Axl graduates high school, Brick moves on to middle school and Sue tries to get her license, for the sixth time. <em>ABC, Wednesday, 8 p.m.</em>

  5. Review: Crime-solving quartet saves the day in 'Bletchley Circle'

Thanks to Sherlock Holmes and his Doctor Watson, we are used to detectives coming in asymmetrical pairs: Your Batman and Robin (superheroes, you say, but their career began in Detective Comics), your Poirot and Hastings, your Morse and Lewis, your Lewis and Hathaway. Your Doctor and his current companion. The hero and the prot&eacute;g&eacute;, the genius and the occasionally inspired sidekick.

  9. TV review: 'Hemlock Grove' wallows in its own fake guts

Back when I was young and the world was new and only one kid we knew had a (very small, black-and-white) TV in his room, my cousins, my brother and I used to put on plays in the basement. We were big fans of "Night Stalker," so these were often quite violent plays, involving pentagrams, blood rituals and monsters constructed with whatever we had on hand &mdash; my mother's old hula skirt got a lot of use, as did her sheared raccoon coat, a ratty old "That Girl" wig and the fake blood we breathlessly purchased with Our Own Money from the back of comic books.

  11. 'Grimm' gets an upgrade to Tuesdays

NBC's ratings news has been grim lately, but one bright spot has been "Grimm." Now in its second season, the supernatural drama, which has performed well on Friday nights, is getting a schedule upgrade. It's moving to Tuesdays.

  17. 'Grimm' star David Giuntoli: Expect more gore, scarier monsters

David Giuntoli plays Det. Nick Burkhardt on NBC's "Grimm," which is one of the struggling network's bright spots. The supernatural procedural tells the tale of a Portland police detective who discovers that he's a descendant of the Grimms, who not only chronicled strange beasts in their fairy tales but also hunted them to keep the human world safe. He can see these creatures, called Wesen, even when they hide in human form, and many of them are out to get him. Show Tracker was able to talk to the busy actor before the second half of the season begins March 8.

  19. Many veteran TV shows are struggling this season

There has been a lot of talk this television season about the lack of new hits. Indeed, while a few shows such as CBS' "Elementary" and Fox's "The Following" are posting some decent numbers, there have been far more flops in the fall and mid-season.

  21. Holiday gifts fit for a fairy tale

Once upon a time &mdash; and by that we mean just a few months ago &mdash; it was the old-school horror genre that was being dusted off and repurposed into 21st century popular culture replete with wizards, werewolves, zombies and the hollow-cheeked vampires of the vanities.
