5. Patt Morrison Asks: Norman Lear, TV's seriously funny icon

Television comedy can probably be divided into two eras: B.L. and A.L. — Before Lear and After Lear. Norman Lear's seminal 1970s sitcoms —"All in the Family" and its offspring, from"Maude" to "The Jeffersons" — used the laissez-passer of comedy to bring politics, race, abortion and sexism into the nation's living rooms, and made Archie Bunker a virtual member of all of the nation's families. Then in 1981, Lear founded People For the American Way. In Washington, on Thursday night, the organization celebrates the upcoming 90th birthday of the man who pushed the TV definition of family and praises his own wife and six kids as "the greatest family in the history of families."

7. Smaller legs of world cruises can be a deal

The British couple — she in a long black dress, he in a traditional tux — leaned against the elevator's polished wood paneling as they headed back to their cabin after an evening performance in the main showroom. Embarrassed at my casual clothes and running shoes, I stammered, "We decided not to dress up and went to the buffet instead of the main dining room."

13. Aprons: Go ahead and tie one on

Is there another kitchen object that carries as much baggage as the apron?
Is there another kitchen object that carries as much baggage as the apron? A whisk and a wooden spoon are, after all, tools to get the job done. But an apron? For years, aprons were commonplace and worn with pride. But somewhere along the line the apron...

17. Off the Shelf: Can I get a little respect, here?

"Introduce yourself! I gotta eat lunch!" The entertainment director at Ghost Town in the Sky hunkered over his burger and fries. I stood on the stage warming up with my sister-in-law, Tomi Lunsford, a Nashville singer-songwriter who performs music to accompany my trilogy of children's novels set in Appalachia. It was mid-July, and we had been on the road for several days in Tennessee and North Carolina on a kind of "O Brother Where Art Thou" family book tour of five adults and four kids caravaning through the mountains.

WILLIAM H. FREY, a demographer at the Brookings Institution and a research professor with the University of Michigan Population Studies Center, is the author of "America by the Numbers."
NEARLY 30 years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson stood before the U.S. Census Bureau's Population Clock to proclaim the arrival of the 200-millionth American. But don't expect President Bush to do the same when the 300-millionth American is anointed...
