  1. Critic's Notebook: Recommendations for reruns

For reasons that have more to do with ad sales tradition than modern viewer function, television does not have the same deeply committed relationship to summer as it does to fall or even spring. Audiences are presumed to be splintered by holiday travel, their daily habits interrupted by barbecues, beach days and — for this year at least — the Summer Olympics.

  11. Review: Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes a first-rate, funny 'Veep'

Armando Iannucci's droll, fleet "Veep," which premieres Sunday on HBO and stars Julia Louis-Dreyfusas Selina Meyer, vice president of the United States, has nothing to do with Sarah Palin, who once came close to occupying that post and bears a minor resemblance to the star. It is, rather, an Americanization of Iannucci's fitfully ongoing 2005 BBC series "The Thick of It" and its spun-off 2009 film "In the Loop," whose protagonists are minor ministers in the U.K. government, and which make comedy from the place where power and powerlessness, ambition and limitation overlap.

  15. Critic's Notebook: Has TV matured to the 'just friends' stage?

Way back when the world was young and romantic comedies opened at theaters every weekend, "When Harry Met Sally" had everyone talking, and not just because of that famous deli scene. Within minutes of meeting Sally (Meg Ryan), Harry (Billy Crystal) flatly states that women and men cannot be friends, because no matter what sort of relationship is occurring on the surface, deep down all the men are interested in is having sex. Even with the women they don't find attractive.

  17. Critic's Notebook: NBC welcomes 'Grimm' development

In the endless prelude to the premiere of "Smash," the hand-wringing over the state of NBC was something to behold. After canning "Prime Suspect," its big ticket fall show, in what can be called only a panic, and bombing with its presumed John Grisham shoo-in "The Firm," the network needs a hit more than a flower needs rain, etc.
