  7. Solemn or silly — these actors can do it all

A panic-stricken middle-aged man, wearing little more than a gas mask and tighty-whities, is driving a dilapidated RV across the desert. Two unconscious bodies and a dead one slide around in the back — near his portable methamphetamine lab. He wants to make money before he dies of cancer.

  11. The Emmys: HBO is nominations king

Looking over the Emmy nominations announced Thursday morning, you'd almost think that the TV academy was honoring two separate industries. For drama and made-for-TV movies and miniseries, it's HBO and its basic-cable cousins. For everything else, it's broadcast.

  13. Critic's Notebook: The 'Glee' machine

Despite its fresh-faced cast, G-rating and untainted, unapologetic air of jubilance (see, please, the two exclamation points, both of which are quite sincere), "Glee Live! In Concert!" seemed very much at home in Las Vegas, where the stars of Fox's hit show kicked off their second live tour.

  15. Book review: 'Knowing Jesse' by Marianne Leone

During the all-too-brief life of their physically disabled son, Jesse, who died in his sleep five years ago at the age of 17, the actors Marianne Leone (who played the mother of actor Michael Imperioli on HBO's "The Sopranos") and Chris Cooper (an Academy Award winner for his work in "Adaptation"), often sought relief in black humor. They would joke that if they were booked onto an afternoon talk show, their screen ID would read: "Tragic parents of severely handicapped child." What made the line funny was not just that it was politically incorrect but that it captured their dilemma. Others may have seen them this way, but that was not how they saw themselves.

NEW YORK -- Steve Buscemi does not bear much physical resemblance to Enoch "Nucky" Johnson, the tall, broad-shouldered political boss whose 30-year rule of Atlantic City inspired HBO's new Prohibition-era drama "Boardwalk Empire."
