8. 'The Liar' at Writers' Theatre in Glencoe ★★★

THEATER REVIEW: Hot on the heels of "The School for Lies," a freewheeling Moliere adaptation by David Ives at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, comes "The Liar."
An extraterrestrial visitor to the theater of Chicagoland this year might well conclude that the good people of 17th-century France had both exceptional timing and more than a passing familiarity with Twitter. Hot on the heels of "The School for Lies,"...

12. When the sun, and mayor, pop up for the arts

Each and every year in Chicago, there is a moment when the problems of the city seem to fall away and everything seems doable and winnable again. It is a moment inextricably tied to the weather. Spring always comes later than even the worst-case scenario. But there's always one day — an hour, even — when it finally arrives with such blazing force you know winter is dead and buried for the year. That's when a smart politician knows to pop up outdoors.

William Shakespeare and his company were not the first artistic entity to suck up to their funders and protectors, and they surely weren't the last. Still, it's hard to watch the last scenes of “Henry VIII” without fantasizing that Wily Old...

18. Summer 2013: 10 theater shows for a sunny Chicago

Here are 10 of what might well turn out of be the hottest shows of an essential Chicago summer. And after the kind of springs we get, aren't they all essential?
Two components of many a Chicago summer of live entertainment are absent this year — there's no Cirque du Soleil tent at the United Center and no Riverfront Theater at the Tribune Company's Freedom Center. So you'll have to go camping for fun...

22. In 'Roadkill' and 'h.g.,' powerful shows for small audiences

There's nothing new in Chicago about theater in small spaces — that's a crucial part of the city's aesthetic. If you glance at my recommended shows, you'll see several pieces staged in theaters with fewer than 100 seats, including "Rabbit," "Lascivious Something," "In the Company of Men" and the not-to-be-missed production of "The Knowledge" at the Steep Theatre, where, as one of my theater-loving Tribune colleagues recently noted, you are plenty close enough to see the veins bulging in the neck of actress Caroline Neff.
