BEST MOVIES OF 2011: 3. WAR HORSE

Speaking of tributes to the past, Stephen Spielberg puts together his best John Ford film with WAR HORSE.

The animals are even more impressive, as we watch an extraordinary horse named Joey as its sold into war.

The movie is extremely over-sentimental, but that worked for me. This horse finds itself in so many strenuous situations, as did many of the people it encounters during World War I. The film is masterfully photographed and edited, with a few riveting trench warfare sequences.
