Whats It All About? Starring Kim Basinger, Alex Carter and Bruce Greenwood. Based on the celebrated book by Sue Monk Kidd, Lifetime's "The Mermaid Chair" tells the story of a 42-year-old woman, Jesse Sullivan, who, while on a trip home to her mother's, unexpectedly meets a Benedictine monk - and falls in love, spiritually speaking. With Brother Thomas' help, she undergoes an awakening and transformation that will profoundly affect the rest of her life.
Putting your novel into the hands of a film studio and director is emotionally akin to leaving your child in the hands of strangers. While she might have been justifiably nervous putting her trust in the movie industry for the first time, Kidd's experience overseeing the script (with daughter Ann Kidd Taylor) was overwhelmingly positive. "The really gratifying part, for me, was that they took almost all of my suggestions. Not all of them - when they didn't take my suggestions, I came to see their point of view and understand why they needed to do it that particular way."
Through its adaptation to the small screen, "The Mermaid Chair" will reach out to a broader audience than ever before, bringing its simple but powerful message to millions. And thanks to its sensitive transition to film, Kidd is able to communicate what she intended when she first put pen to paper: "I would hope that women would experience that spiritual essence of coming home to one's self through watching this film, or at least the value in that. And when I say 'coming home to one's self,' I'm really talking about a very particular place in the feminine soul, where, when a woman comes there, she is home. She belongs to herself."
