5. Desert Hot Springs: Where being in hot water is a good thing

Travelers come to Desert Hot Springs for the water. The drinking water for Palm Springs' quiet northern neighbor runs pure from an underground aquifer, and approximately 30 spa hotels tap a separate aquifer of hot, therapeutic mineral water that originates under Miracle Hill. Homesteader Cabot Yerxa was the first to find both in 1913, and his handmade, 35-room Hopi-style home has been preserved by the city as Cabot's Pueblo Museum (67-616 E. Desert View Ave., [760] 329-7610, www.cabotsmuseum.org).

  15. The hot springs will make you want to dive right in

Dubbed the "Circle City" in honor of its circular Grand Boulevard, which hosted car races in the early 20th century, this Riverside County city was also once hailed as the "lemon capital of the world." Today, the citrus groves are mostly gone but it's a thriving residential hub of 150,000 residents, and a few attractions still make it a draw for Southern Californians.

  17. Banff's snowy serenity

The ultimate in dark and stormy nights -- that's the thought I clung to as my flight landed in Calgary, Alberta's gateway to the Banff-Lake Louise region. I could see little but a huge black sky as a shuttle took me through the city and toward my hotel.

  23. It's not hip, but it's heaven
