Cargo ship plan aims to protect whales, air quality off Santa Barbara

A pilot program starting this summer will tackle two environmental problems posed by thousands of cargo ships that use the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach each year: The hulking vessels are major sources of air pollution and the shipping lanes overlap with a prime feeding area for migrating blue whales off Santa Barbara. Under a voluntary initiative, ship operators will be compensated for slowing as they travel through the Santa Barbara Channel.
