Dear K.B.: When it comes to breast health, weight matters the most in my opinion. Another important factor is hormone balance. Flabby abs and thighs can increase production of cancer-causing hormones, including estrogen. Clinical trials often conclude that estrogen promotes cell proliferation in breast tumors.
testosterone and androstenedione to estrogen within cells.
The point is weight is critical, and choosing good foods can help you maintain your figure while slashing cancer risk. I think the best breast food is broccoli. Along with cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and turnips, these have a positive effect on the way you break down estrogen. They reduce harmful estrogens while increasing an anti-cancer form of estrogen called 2-methoxyestradiol. Supplements that increase production of this "2 estrogen" are sold at health food stores as "I3C" for indole-3-carbinol, or a related type that's better for people with low stomach acid called DIM. Both I3C and DIM are proven to support breast and prostate health. Natural iodine supplements can help, too.
On my no-no list are fried or fast foods; boxed, processed or heavily refined dinners; anything artificial as well as a diet high in refined sugar. Coconut, olive, avocado and grape seed oil are all wonderful. Spices such as curcumin and saffron are powerful herbs you should eat frequently (or supplement with). Also, monitor your hormones with a urine analysis each year.
