The 1960s mantra about getting ourselves back to the garden now applies to an increasing number of beauty products, with some small companies literally going to the garden and farm to bring customers fresh, natural, pure and organic ingredients in their hair- and skin-care items.

Is it nutritionally risky to put babies and children on a vegan diet, or is it the best thing for them?

  5. Natural foods: Eating up the trends

Remember chia pets? Rinsing your hair with beer? Food that's just food — no soy protein isolate, xanthan gum, red dye No. 40 or mystery ingredients from the Amazon rain forest?

  11. That bad attitude? Blame the birth month

If you don't believe in horoscopes, you're in step with science. But that's not the same as saying the season of your birth cannot affect your fate. Hundreds of studies, published in peer-reviewed journals, have suggested that the month a person is born in is associated with characteristics such as temperament, longevity and susceptibility to certain diseases.

Jack LaLanne was an incredible showoff, and with good reason.
Jack LaLanne was an incredible showoff, and with good reason. If you can do 1,033 push-ups in 23 minutes at the "over-the-hill" age of 42, then by all means show yourself off. If you can swim more than a mile through the strong currents of Long Beach...

  21. Letters: Different views on the need for vitamin D

I was deeply saddened with the Institute of Medicine report that we are a healthy nation in regard to our calcium and vitamin D intakes ["Sweeping Away the Hype About Vitamin D," Dec. 6]. As a physician keenly interested in my patients' nutrition status and needs, I find the report flawed. By arbitrarily setting the lower limit of normal vitamin D blood level at 20 nanograms per milliliter, they are missing the borderline deficiency between 20 and 40 ng/ml.

  23. Multivitamins: Do his and hers make a difference?

It's a good thing dietary guidelines aren't laws. If they were, just about all of us could be found guilty. Even if you load fruit onto your whole-grain cereal and pile greens on your sandwiches, chances are you're regularly falling short on one or more nutrients.
