3. Eating local with a delivery service is easy - but you'll pay

In the latest chapter in my monthlong project to feed my family only on foods from within 100 miles of my house, most of my meals last week came from the Out of the Box Collective. So far, I have made pasta with fresh tomato sauce, poached eggs in stir-fried greens, roasted chicken breast with potatoes and a red bell pepper sauce, steak with seared tomatoes, and vegetable soup, and I still have unused lamb shanks and vegetables in my fridge.

In the restaurant world, being called "a regular" is a badge of honor. Phil Gittelman has been eating at Hugo's in West Hollywood almost every day for 32 years. He is so fond of the restaurant, which opened in 1980, that he is more than a customer; he's become a living time capsule for the place, a faithful repository of its stories, characters and food.

  23. Jonathan Gold | Restaurant review: On the M.A.K.E. for raw vegan cuisine

If you are the kind of diner who gets hung up on first impressions, M.A.K.E., Matthew Kenney's raw-vegan restaurant in Santa Monica Place, may not be for you. It is not just on the dining deck but actually in the mall's food court, so to get to it you have to pass by any number of gadget shops and cheese counters. Its open-walled design makes it difficult to figure out where the food court ends and the dining room begins.
