  3. Risotto rides to the rescue

My misadventures in the garden have been pretty well chronicled. But every once in a while, I do something right -- even if it's by accident. Take my tat soi, for example.

  5. Survivalist themes in TV shows, movies tap into fear of the big fall

Frankly, it sounded pretty stupid. For reasons unknown, electricity fails worldwide, sending humanity into a post-technological free-fall. Weeds grow in the Capitol (very "Logan's Run"), young women defend their families with bows and arrows (very "Hunger Games"), and no one seems to remember that people made ice cream and bullets long before electricity was harnessed as a personal power source.

  7. SAG Awards 2013: 'Argo' a go-go; Day-Lewis an Oscar frontrunner

"Argo" took home a single prize at the 19th Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night, but it was the one that mattered most. Winning the trophy for performance by a cast in a motion picture, Ben Affleck's CIA drama solidified its status as the front-runner in an Oscar race that had been muddled for weeks. Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" nabbed two of the top acting prizes: Daniel Day-Lewis was named lead actor for his performance as the 16th president, while Tommy Lee Jones was named actor in a supporting role for his portrayal of Rep. Thaddeus Stevens. But the film's momentum in the Oscar best picture race has been stalled by its SAG cast loss and by its defeat at the hands of "Argo" at Saturday night's Producers Guild Awards.

  9. Fred Couples can tell you some Riviera Country Club history

Ben Hogan bought the fairway to heaven, Humphrey Bogart no longer stands pickled and perched beneath the sycamore on No. 12 and member Jim Murray isn't around to describe Riviera Country Club, as he once did, as "like a coquettish woman who winks at you behind her fan."

  13. Susan Love, doctor/patient

And now, she is the patient. For decades, as a surgeon, researcher, professor and medical celebrity of sorts, Susan Love has led the charge against breast cancer and for women's health. She served on President Clinton's cancer advisory board. She set up a research foundation. Her book on breast cancer is on the short shelf for clinicians and counselors. And last June, when, like so many women, she was feeling and doing fine, the diagnosis came. Except it wasn't breast cancer but leukemia. The woman who has battled one kind of cancer on behalf of millions of women finds herself fighting another kind, on her own
