Nearly $100 million in improvements to Delnor Hospital in Geneva are under way — almost two years after a partnership was formed with another area hospital, a collaboration officials say will make healthcare more accessible to Tri-Cities residents.

  5. Steinberg: Football, and other contact sports, need to be rethought

In previous columns, I suggested that the increased size, speed and strength of today's NFL players are creating a dramatically more damaging set of collisions. We have known for years of the devastation these collisions cause on every joint in the human...

  7. Going outside the hospital walls to improve health

Study after study demonstrates that poverty is a powerful driver of poor health. Many of America's leading hospitals exist in poor communities. Could these powerful institutions (in economic as well as medical terms) help overcome the deeper sources of failing health among the 46 million Americans living in poverty?

  9. Eating your way to heart health

Famed heart surgeon Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. has long rallied against the overuse of stents, cholesterol drugs and other conventional heart disease treatments. His solution? A diet rich in green, leafy vegetables. Doctors generally agree that a healthy diet is beneficial, but it's usually considered one piece of a larger treatment plan. To Esselstyn, however, heart disease is a "foodborne illness, one that can be prevented, reversed and even abolished by eating a plant-based, oil-free diet, one that eliminates meat, milk, fish, eggs and dairy."

  11. Biblioracle: Bring 'Geek Love' to the big screen

In general, I like to keep my books and my movies separate. When I finish a book and clutch it to my breast in a final loving embrace, I am not fantasizing about how the characters and conflict will play out on screen, since I've already had it play out across the inside of my skull.

  13. Pope shows lifetime jobs aren't always for life

The world seems surprised that an 85-year-old globe-trotting pope who just started tweeting wants to resign, but should it be? Maybe what should be surprising is that more leaders his age do not, considering the toll aging takes on bodies and minds amid a culture of constant communication and change.
