  23. Donald J. Lohr, 89, of Hooversville

    Donald J. Lohr, 89, of Hooversville, died April 20, 2013 at Windber Hospice. Born Aug. 12, 1923 in Pretoria, the son of Herbert M. and Evalyn M. (Custer) Lohr. Preceded in death by parents; first wife Charlotte (Caldwell); two infant brothers; sisters Margaret and Marian Lohr and Virginia Border. Survived by wife of 46 years, Caroline B. (Hegadus) Lohr, married July 30, 1966; sons, Richard D., Hooversville, and Herbert A., married to Anne Longenberger, Strasburg; grandchildren, Megan M. Lohr, Dillsburg, and Michael D. Lohr, Dillsburg. A graduate of Shade High School, he was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W.II where he was a member of the 28th Infantry Division and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and four Bronze Stars. A retired draftsman and tool and die engineer for Bethlehem Steel, Johnstown, and Allegheny Ballistics Laboratory in Maryland. Member of Cambria Lodge 278, F&amp;AM where he was a past Master, Altoona Consistory, Jaffa Temple; Knights Templar 61; Cambria Council 32; Portage Royal Arch 195; Allied Masonic Degree 67; Red Cross of Constantine; Johnstown Shrine Club; Somerset Shrine Club and National Camping Travelers. He was also a member St. Thomas Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served on the council, taught Sunday School and was a lay minister. Former member of the Conemaugh Township School Board. Don enjoyed hunting, bowling, camping and traveling. The family would like to thank the staff of Windber Hospice for their kindness and compassion. Viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hoffman Funeral Home &amp; Cremation Services, 109 Church Road, Davidsville where a Masonic service will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday. Viewing also from 10 a.m. until time of service, 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Lutheran Church with Pastor Nila Cogan presiding. Interment Custer Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Donald's memory may be sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607.
