  1. Put your stress on vacation

    Got stress?
Got stress? If you answered no, hooray for you! (And, by the way, what planet are you from?) But if you answered yes (like any normal member of the human race), you're likely heartened by the arrival of vacation season. Just the ticket for a little...

  3. 'Weapons of persuasion' from Robert Cialdini

Mitt Romney on the stump, singles at the bar, car salesmen on the lot: All sorts of people are practicing the art of persuasion, with varying degrees of success.

  5. Twitter friends: It may be a good idea to meet up

I've been live-tweeting "The Bachelor." There, I said it. To a lot of people, including my inner circle of friends, my penchant for reality dating programming (and my willingness to document it in real time) makes me exceedingly nerdy. In fact, I suspect that some of my closest buddies hang out with me despite the fact that I like "The Bachelor." But thanks to Twitter, even though I might be sitting on my couch by myself, searching for the show's hash tag and hitting refresh means I never watch an episode solo.

  7. On Pinterest, it's share and share alike

Americans spend upward of 30 hours a month staring at their computer screens, shopping and browsing and seeking. We relish the efficiency, the expanse of information, the anonymity and the freedom. But we are social creatures and as such, can't seem to stop gathering in various online communities to share music or photos of fabulous dinners or handbags.

  9. That bad attitude? Blame the birth month

If you don't believe in horoscopes, you're in step with science. But that's not the same as saying the season of your birth cannot affect your fate. Hundreds of studies, published in peer-reviewed journals, have suggested that the month a person is born in is associated with characteristics such as temperament, longevity and susceptibility to certain diseases.

  15. Liking yourself just the way you are

You know it's tough out there when fashion and beauty executives think that even a model's body isn't good enough to sell clothes or that a celebrity's natural face isn't up to par, even with makeup.

  17. Dutch scientist accused of falsifying data

Social psychologist Diederik Stapel made a name for himself by pushing his field into new territory. His research papers appeared to demonstrate that exposure to litter and graffiti makes people more likely to commit small crimes and that being in a messy environment encourages people to buy into racial stereotypes, among other things.

  23. Book Review: 'Millennium People' by J.G. Ballard

When J.G. Ballard died in April 2009, he left behind a body of work dominated by a few key ideas. First were the erotic possibilities of violence, as embodied by his 1973 novel "Crash." Equally important was his sense of suburban life as not just soul-dead but also dangerous — where beneath a surface layer of conformity we find ugliness and rage. It's easy, in an age of workplace violence and school shootings, to take such a vision for granted; what Ballard is reflecting back at us is the essence of ourselves. But when he first explored these concepts in the 1960s, it was a departure as radical in its way as any of that era.
