In the brief essays that follow, Malcolm Potts from UC Berkeley sets up the situation we are facing, and population experts from around the globe explain some of the approaches they've seen work — and the reasons others have not. The series, by Times staff writer Kenneth R. Weiss and staff photographer Rick Loomis, can be found at latimes.com/populationrising.

  7. To Glorya Kaufman, the art of dance is a gift on several levels

Tall, sinewy women, their necks thin and erect, mingle in wispy dresses on the arms of broad-shouldered men under the twinkling white lights of the canopied back patio at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons. As dusk fades and cocktails are served, the black-tie crowd moves with a particular rhythmic elegance. Maybe that's because some of the country's biggest names in dance are here. There are Debbie Allen, Diavolo Dance Theater's Jacques Heim, choreographer and one-time Joffrey prima ballerina Jodie Gates, as well as Complexions Contemporary Ballet co-founder and dancer Desmond Richardson.

  19. Don't mock the new ultrasound viewing parties

Here’s a new trend I wasn’t expecting in 2013: ultrasound parties. Yes, you read that right. Pregnant women can now invite their friends and family over for ultrasound viewing parties in the comfort of their own homes. That goes way beyond the traditional baby shower and the more recent (and indulgent) practice of gender-reveal fetes. “Welcome to the new frontier in pregnancy oversharing,” writes Lela Davidson, who details the trend on "Today."
