  1. Today's Buzz: Should obesity be a disease?

The American Medical Association’s House of Delegates voted this week to declare obesity a disease. The vote effectively diagnoses a third of U.S. adults and 17 percent of children with a medical condition that needs treatment. The designation makes diagnosing and treating obesity a professional obligation for doctors, and will put pressure on insurance companies to cover medical treatments for weight loss. Some skeptics worry the new label could undercut the personal responsibility of people to eat properly and exercise, while others fear it could stigmatize obese Americans. Do you agree with the AMA decision? Do you think it will reduce, or add, to obesity in America? Do you think it will increase or cut health costs? Why do you think the nation’s obesity rate has risen sharply in the past 30 years? Talk about it!
