Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ambrose Thomas Donnelly, 76, of Williamsburg, Va., passed away Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012.
A graduate with distinction from the U.S. Naval Officers Candidate School in Newport, R.I., Cmdr. Donnelly proudly served his country from 1953 to 1981, including service during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation and Good Conduct Medal. He also was a graduate of the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif., with a degree in electrical engineering. Upon leaving the service, Ambrose was employed in the defense industry by Raytheon.
The past president of the Rolling Woods Homeowners Association, Ambrose enjoyed reading, painting, crossword puzzles, computers and watching golf, and was a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He also was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church in Williamsburg.
He is survived by his wife, Janice M. Donnelly; four sons, Thomas Edward Donnelly (Robbie), Philip Patrick Donnelly (Jane), Robert William Donnelly (Marion) and Michael James Donnelly; seven grandchildren, Lindsey D. Melrose, John Thomas Donnelly, Heather Hernandez, Hannah D. Fahnestock, Adam Thomas Donnelly, Jeffery Michael Nichols and Timothy Mercer; two great-grandsons; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Hugh Edward Donnelly; nephew, Edward Donnelly; niece, Susan Donnelly; father, Michael Donnelly; mother, Suzanne Maloney; uncle, Charles J. Maloney; and aunt, Bridgette Maloney.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at 9 a.m. at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
