Bettie L. Alexander, 69, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, after a brief illness with cancer.
Born April 25, 1943, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Ethel "Ginny" Klick and the late John E Potter.
She was a 1961 graduate of North Hagerstown High School, and received her daycare license from Hagerstown Community College. She was a former Girl Scout leader in the Funkstown school area for many years, and a current member of the McClellan Gun Club.
She was formerly employed by and had retired from Martin's Food, and during her retirement had briefly worked in the daycare field. Most recently she helped in the kitchen of the McClellan Gun Club, where she will be remembered for her passion of preparing home-cooked meals.
She enjoyed many crafts such as needlepoint, crocheting and woodworking, and especially enjoyed the time she spent fishing, crabbing and boating with her husband, family and friends at her second home on the bay in Chincoteague, Va. She was a loving mother and "Nanny," and helped to raise her first few grandchildren from birth, so that they could be with family during the important first few years of life while their parents returned to work. She will be remembered for her love of preparing and sharing holiday meals with family and friends, and preparing home-cooked dishes for those in times of comfort.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Pierce Alexander Jr.; daughter, Patricia "Patti" Gouff and her companion, Terry Wigfield; son, James "Butch" Alexander; daughter, Lisa Sword and husband, Eric; daughter, Jahna DeHaven and husband, Pete; a "special son," Jeff Rhone; and seven grandchildren, Nathan Gouff, Cody Hartle, Amanda Nichols, Linsey Hartle, Alex Sword, Logan DeHavan and Bradley Sword; and one great-grandson, Bentley Mullen.
Per her wishes, Bettie was cremated and will enter eternal rest in her husband's arms at his passing.
A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. at Good Shepherd Ministries, 19763 Longmeadow Road, Hagerstown. Pastor Bradford Reaves will conduct the service.
The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the Good Shepherd Ministries church in her name.
