Carnival to start in Berkeley Springs

The fire company carnival in nearby Berkeley Springs, W.Va., lights up the sky next week, July 3-7, nightly from 6 to 10 p.m.

The carnival is the grounds of U.S. Silica on W.Va. 522 just over the Potomac River bridge.

There will be food, bingo, rides and entertainment every evening.

On the Fourth of July, the Parrott Beach Band performs with the best of Jimmy Buffett-style music.

There will also be a baby contest on July 4 at 6 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to take a lawn chair.

Day camp planned for middle schoolers

The National Park Service at the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath will hold a middle school day camp to be held in Hancock from Monday, July 23, through Wednesday, July 25, at the Bowles House Visitors Center off East Main Street.

Hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Students preparing to enter grades seven to nine can spend time with park rangers enjoying fishing, biking, hiking, games and crafts. Space is limited.

Vacation Bible school to take place July 15-19

“Take Me To the Water” is the theme of the upcoming vacation Bible school at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church.

The program runs nightly from Sunday, July 15, through Thursday, July 19, from 7 to 9 p.m.

It offers classes for all ages, from preschool to adults.

Coordinator Tracy Salvagno said the water-related theme will include a picnic supper one evening and time at the nearby C&O Canal towpath and Potomac River.

Bible stories, skits, games, special music and nightly snacks are part of the program.  The church is at Church and High streets.
