Philemon was 17 at the time of the Battle of Antietam and collected many artifacts from the fields around the town in the immediate days after the battle.
The society also has a plate from a Sharpsburg family, on which they served dinner to Gen. Robert E. Lee. The exhibit contains a Wheeler leg splint made by Dr. Wheeler from the area somewhere off Wheeler Road and a wall sconce from Dunker Church.
The newest War of 1812 exhibit contains the personal troop records of Capt. John Miller of Sharpsburg — a 16-by-20 parchment muster roll and two journals, all from 1813. Col. Miller, his later rank, is buried at Antietam, with a large monument.
Civil War author to discuss book at library
Author Charles Whitehair will share his book “Escape Across the Potomac” Thursday, April 26, at 7 p.m. at the Sharpsburg Library. After his presentation, Whitehair will be available to sign copies his book.

Legion auxiliary to collect worn flags
From April 20 to May 21, residents of Sharpsburg and the surrounding area can place their worn American flags for proper disposal in a collection barrel in front of Sharpsburg Town Hall.
Unit members of the American Legion Auxiliary, Antietam Unit 236, have provided the barrel and remind all Americans that it is important to display flags for patriotic holidays.
Sharpsburg Fire Co. plans chicken barbecue
Sharpsburg Fire Co. will sell barbequed chicken in front of the Jefferson Security Bank on the Square in Sharpsburg Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. The dinners cost $7 for one-half barbecue chicken, baked beans, applesauce and a roll. It costs $6 for one-half chicken and one roll. The event will be held rain or shine.
Little League bonanza
Sharpsburg Little League will hold a money bonanza Saturday, April 28, from 4 p.m. to midnight at Williamsport Fire Hall. Tickets cost $35 a couple. A meal of fried chicken, ham, meatballs, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, dessert, draft beer or soda will be served at 6 p.m. Ticket drawings will begin at 7.
DJ Knights of the Turntable will play dance favorites at 9 p.m. Tip jars will be available throughout the evening.

Sharpsburg recycling bin to be removed
The Sharpsburg community recycling bin in the parking area of the town EMS/Fire facilities will be removed permanently June 1. Residents who wish to have home curb side recycling pick up must do so at their own expense by contacting Apple Valley Waste at 1-877-267-1280 or go to www.applevalleywaste.com.
Ruritan accepting vendors
The Rohrersville Ruritan is accepting craft vendors, flea market vendors or yard sale vendors for its June 9 and 10 strawberry festival. Vendor spaces are free, but vendors must contact J.R. at email@example.com or 240-818-1038 to reserve a space. The Ruritan is also looking for churches, Scouting groups or any other group that would like to perform or help with children’s activities.
