Museum to hold Fun Day
The Washington County Rural Heritage Museum and Washington County Ag Expo and Fair will hold a Heritage Fun Day Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
Visitors can step back in time to the 1800s and tour the museum and village. All buildings will be staffed with volunteers to share their knowledge and answer questions.
4-H youths will be demonstrating trades and crafts and activities throughout the day. There will be demonstrations of butter making, weaving, bracelet making and sheep shearing. There will also be rug-hooking demonstrations, clay marble making, old-fashioned games and music.
Master gardeners will provide information and education in the German Four-Square Garden.
Battlefield hosts Civil War encampment
South Mountain State Battlefield will host “Twilight’s Last Gleaming” at Gathland State Park July 28 and 29.
The event will feature battlefield staff and volunteers portraying Confederate infantry, cavalry and artillery who participated in the Sept. 14, 1862, Battle of South Mountain.
Ongoing living history demonstrations, which will take place Saturday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will discuss the life of common Confederate soldiers during the 1862 Maryland Campaign, as well as present biographies of some of the units that fought in the area.
Cavalry demonstrations on horseback will take place Saturday at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. It will be an opportunity to see various types of Confederate soldiers and to discover how each of them contributed to the battle.
Equestrian center offers riding camps
STAR Equestrian Center is offering adventure camps Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for those ages 6 to 14. Each camp has a themed topic, features care practices and riding instruction, creative ways to learn horsemanship, daily “horsey” crafts, water activities and games, and trail rides.
The camp costs $250 per week. Space is still available in the remaining theme weeks of July 30 to Aug. 3 (Western Riding Week) and Aug. 6 to 10 (English Riding Week). To register, call Ginny at 301-791-6222 or send an email to email@example.com.
Kiwanis golf classic to take place Aug. 3
The Hagerstown Kiwanis Club will sponsor its “Kiwanis Klassic” father/mother–son/daughter 18-hole scramble golf tournament Friday, Aug. 3, starting at 11:30 a.m at Beaver Creek Country Club.
The entry fee costs $150 per team, which covers greens fee, cart, meal, two beverages and a buffet dinner at 4:30 p.m.

Pet vaccination clinic
The Humane Society of Washington County will hold a free vaccination clinic for dogs and cats for county residents Saturday July 28, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the USMH Courtyard, 32 W. Washington St. in Hagerstown. The clinic is limited to county residents and proof of residency will be required.
The vaccinations are Canine DHLPP, which includes distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and the Feline FVRCP, which includes panleukopenia, feline viral rhinotrachetis and calicivirus. Rabies vaccinations will also be given to dogs and cats. Proof of previous rabies vaccination is required to receive a three-year vaccination.
