Heritage Museum to hold Spudfest

Friends of the Washington County Rural Heritage Museum will hold their ninth annual Spudfest Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center off Sharpsburg Pike.  

Potatoes planted in the spring will be harvested by horse-drawn plow beginning at 11 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded to the children for finding the largest and smallest potatoes. Other activities for children include a potato sack race, spoon relay and other family games.

All museum, homestead, and village buildings will be open to visitors.

An outdoor bread-baking demonstration will be held at the wood-fired oven and master gardeners will be in the German Four-Square Garden.

Sharpsburg Elementary to hold orientation   

Sharpsburg Elementary will hold a back-to-school orientation Monday, Aug. 22 (pre-K and K at 5 p.m., grades 1 and 2 at 6 p.m.) and Tuesday, Aug. 23 (grades 3 to 5 at 6 p.m.).

Salem Lutheran to dedicate building

Salem Lutheran Church in Bakersville will dedicate the Old Church Building at 17630 Bakersville Road Saturday, Aug. 27, at noon.  

The restored stone building, built in 1823, was also used as the Bakersville School from 1870 to 1939. Presidents Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt visited the building.

Pastor John Torrence will bless the restored building and a dedication tombstone will be placed to remember those who gave their lives during the Civil War.

The dedication ceremony will be followed by encampment groups, professional clowns, honor guards, school bands, a soloist and a pig roast.

Fire company to hold steak feed  

Potomac Valley Fire Co. in Dargan will hold a steak feed Saturday at the fire hall. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the meal begins at 6.

The menu consists of steak, baked potato, green beans and baked beans, cole slaw, homemade rolls, ice tea and coffee.
