John W. Powell, 67, of Stonecroft Apartments in Hagerstown, Md., passed away Friday, July 27, 2012, at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va., after a short illness.
Born Sept. 30, 1944, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John Henry Powell and Mildred Elizabeth Mulligan Powell.
He was a 1962 graduate of South Hagerstown High School.
After graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force.
He participated in Civil War re-enactments in his early years.
He was employed by and retired from Grove Manufacturing.
He is survived by his three children, Tina Jenkins of Waynesboro, Pa., John Wesley Powell and wife, Kim, of Waynesboro, Pa., and Tammy Powell of New York; four grandchildren, Morgan, Jonathan, Christopher and E.J.; and nephews, Greg Haupt and wife, Tonja, and Jeff Haupt and wife, Diane.
He was preceded in death by his sister, June M. Haupt; and brother, Ronnie Lee Powell.
He donated his body to the Maryland Anatomy Board. His ashes will be returned for burial at a later date at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
A memorial service will be Monday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. at Stonecroft, 11403 Stonecroft Court, Building A, Hagerstown.
