French to speak at Sharpsburg Library
Author Steve French will speak on "Belle Boyd-Myth and Reality" Thursday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m. at Sharpsburg Town Hall. Martinsburg's Belle Boyd was the Confederacy's most famous spy, a best-selling author, an accomplished actress and a fascinating lecturer.
The talk will focus on some of the high and low points in Belle's remarkable life.
French is the author of "Imboden's Brigade in the Gettysburg Campaign" and the editor of "Four Years Along the Tilhance," a Civil War diary.

Fire company to hold breakfast
Potomac Valley Fire Co. in Dargan will hold an all-you-can-eat breakfast Saturday from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the fire hall. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, coffee, orange juice and milk. Tickets cost $5 per person. Those younger than 12 will be admitted free.
Lions to honor district governor
The Sharpsburg Lions will honor District Gov. Stephen Finger and first lady Debra at the district social to be held at the Hagerstown Hotel and Convention Center Saturday, Oct. 8.
The Lions will also attend a pie call at Reeders Memorial Home Oct. 4, followed by a Fahrney-Keedy Sing-a-long Oct. 13.
The Lions will assist with eye screening at Fountain Rock Elementary School (Oct. 18) and Boonsboro Elementary (Oct. 24).
The Lions will hold regular meetings in their Den Oct. 6 and 20.
The club meets the first and third Thursdays at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 209 W. Main St. in Sharpsburg.
Shepherd's Spring to hold Second Saturday event
Shepherd's Spring, at 16869 Taylors Landing Road in Sharpsburg, will hold a Second Saturday "Heifer Global Village" event Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon. The free event will focus on Thailand and the work of Heifer International.

Horse council to present dressage horse show
The Washington County Horse Council will present a Dressage Horse Show Saturday, Oct. 15, at Washington County Agricultural Education Center on Sharpsburg Pike. A photographer and food service will be on site. Classes cost $12 each and the registration deadline is Oct. 10.
