Sharpsburg Elementary School students and staff begin a busy month today with Bank Day, the Good News Club and the PTA holiday shop open today from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for parents and students to shop.
The PTA will hold its After-School Special Thursday, Dec. 15, at 2:30 p.m. Students and staff will wear their favorite hats the next day for Spirit Day, and fourth-graders will hold a holiday program at 6:30 p.m. that day.
On Thursday, Dec. 22, classes will hold winter fiesta parties in their classrooms.
Fire company to hold basket bingo
Potomac Valley Fire Co. in Dargan will hold a basket bingo Saturday. Doors open at 11 a.m. and bingo begins at 1 p.m. Bingo costs $15 for a nine-pack. Extra packs will be available. Special games cost $1. Food will be available.
Fire company to make ‘Santa Run’
Santa will ride a fire truck as Sharpsburg Volunteer Fire Co. makes its Santa Run through the developments in the towns of Sharpsburg and Keedysville on Monday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Santa will have treats for children and will collect children’s letters to Santa. Santa will also gladly accept donations to the fire company. The rain date is Thursday, Dec. 15.
Potters to hold open house Saturday
Blair Meerfeld and Allison Severance will hold a holiday open house and pottery sale Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Pottery at Searchwell, 18839 Manor Church Road in Boonsboro.
Attendees can celebrate family, food and home with handcrafted pottery by local potters in a 19th century farm decked out for the holidays.
The candles and fires will be lit, and the showrooms full of new wood-fired salt glazed pottery from fall firings, all handcrafted and created especially for preparing and serving food or perfect for gift giving.
Rohrersville Cornet Band to present concert Sunday
The Rohrersville Cornet Band will present a Christmas Concert Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Band Hall (the red brick building across the street from the post office).
The concert, under the direction of Holly Feather, will present a program of marches, show tunes and traditional season’s favorites, including a carol sing-along. The history of the band, titled “And the Band Plays On,” compiled by Richard Haynes, director emeritus, will be available for purchase at the concert. The concert is free, though donations are accepted.

Lions selling Bonus Books
The North Hagerstown Lions Club is selling $32 Bonus Books, valid through Dec. 1, 2012, with hundreds of coupons, discounts or buy one, get one free opportunities for the Tri-State area. The coupons are for casual, leisure, fast food/carryout dining, recreation, travel, lodging and other businesses.

Lions collecting coats
For the 25th year, the North Hagerstown Lions Club is collecting Coats for Kids. Drop boxes for coats will be at Valley Mall (near Sears), Richards World of Travel on Potomac Avenue, and Ron’s Always on Burhans Boulevard through Jan. 9.
Items are being accepted for all ages, newborn to adult. Coats will be given to two Washington County nonprofit agencies — Children In Need and The Parent-Child Center.
