Drug-prevention campaign holding home-decorating contest
The National Family Partnership is holding a national contest for its 27th annual Red Ribbon Week, which is Oct. 23 to 31. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug-prevention campaign in the country, according to a news release.
Families can enter Red Ribbon Week’s contest to win a $1,000 grant for their school and a new iPad for their home.
To participate in the contest, families and students will decorate the front of their homes with this year’s message: “The Best Me Is Drug-Free.”

Conococheague Institute annual membership meeting is Saturday
WELSH RUN, Pa. — The Conococheague Institute’s annual membership meeting will take place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Welsh Barrens Visitors Center, Rock Hill Farm, 12995 Bain Road in Mercersburg, Pa.
The annual meeting will feature a potluck membership luncheon and silent auction, followed by a business meeting. Beginning at 2:30 p.m., Mikala Barnhart, a student at James Buchanan High School, will read her essay “Justice William Smith: An Unrecognized Rebel with a Cause.”
At 3 p.m., Linda Ries will offer her presentation, “The Black Boys after the 1765 Sideling Hill Affair.” Ries has been an archivist with the Pennsylvania State Archives, part of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, since 1979.
At 4 p.m., William Pencak will present “Pennsylvania Riflemen from Mercersburg and Elsewhere: A Crucial Link between the French & Indian War and the American Revolution.” Pencak is a professor of history and Jewish studies emeritus at Penn State University, and an adjunct professor at Gettysburg (Pa.) College.
The annual meeting is free to members of the Conococheague Institute.

Kauffman, Alloway named 'Guardian of Small Business' winners
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — State Rep. Rob Kauffman and state Sen. Richard Alloway have been named “Guardian of Small Business” award winners.
The National Federation of Independent Business recently honored both legislators. The award is presented to lawmakers “who work to protect the future of free enterprise and promote policies that help small businesses,” according to a news release.
Kauffman, a Republican, represents the 89th House District in Franklin and Cumberland counties.
Alloway, a Republican, represents the 33rd Senate District, which serves Franklin, Adams and part of York counties.
Franklin County township officials receive citations
MONT ALTO, Pa. — The Franklin County (Pa.) Association of Township Officials recently received citations from the Pennsylvania General Assembly and recognition from the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors for serving the county’s township officials over the past century.
