Zion Baptist Church, at 61 W. Bethel St. in Hagerstown, sponsored a health and fitness Expo Oct. 6.
The objective of the expo was to promote a healthy lifestyle though diet, exercise, nutrition and positive mental health.
The theme for the expo was “Getting Healthy and Fit for God’s Kingdom.” The Rev. Rickey A. Smith Sr. is pastor of Zion Baptist Church.
“We all know when the Lord is involved, we don’t have to worry about it being a great success,” said event leader Linda Brooks. “It was a great success. We invited local health organizations and agencies from Washington County and surrounding areas to aid us in this goal.”
Agencies included the Washington County Health Department, Meritus Medical Center and area nutritionists, Brooks said.
Exhibitors traveled from the Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania and various areas of Maryland.
Exhibits included food preparation, demonstrations, hairstyling, skincare, exercise demonstrations, spiritual dancers, health and vision screenings, dental education information and gospel music.
Speakers included first lady Rose Smith of Zion Baptist Church; Darnita Brown, Zion Baptist Church; Dan Hawthorne, Hagerstown; Thomas Burge, fitness trainer at Hagerstown Community College; and James Frisby, fitness trainer at F.A.S.S.T from Winchester, Va.
Entertainment was provided by Grace’s Favor Dance Ministry of Gaithersburg, Md.; Deanna Schleigh, fitness instructor from Hagerstown; Daphney Smith, fitness instructor at the Hagerstown YMCA; Chandra Bowers fitness instructor at Hagerstown’s Gold’s Gym; and the Senior Divas, led by JoAnn Manuel of Zion Baptist Church.
Tobacco Free Program
The date for the Tobacco Free For Life class has changed from Monday, Oct. 29, to Monday, Nov. 5, twice per week on Mondays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon at Washington County Health Department, 1302 Pennsylvania Ave., and from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Western Maryland Hospital Center, 1500 Pennsylvania Ave.

Train the trainer
The Washington County Health Department’s Tobacco Free For Life Program will hold “Tobacco Cessation — Train the Trainer” Thursday, Nov. 15. Registration deadline is Nov. 12.
The training will be held at the Washington County Health Department, 1302 Pennsylvania Ave., second floor auditorium from 1 to 6 p.m.
The afternoon’s workshop begins with registration at 1 p.m., followed by a welcome and overview followed by discussions with Angela Peterson, MDQuit Resource Center in Baltimore, and Melissa Bartles, certified addictions counselor with the health department’s tobacco cessation staff. There will be a break in between sessions and the event will end with a closing program at 5:45 p.m.
The workshop is funded through the Cigarette Restitution Fund and in partnership with the MDQuit Resource Center.
There is no cost for this training, but registration is required.
