  3. Tigran Hamasyan's global view of jazz

    Culture Monster
Given how Tigran Hamasyan’s career began, it might have been more surprising to learn the 23-year-old pianist didn’t one day sign to a major label. With his fourth album, "A Fable," due next month (his first for Universal France) the......

  7. Why Armenians cannot 'get past' the genocide

Just as The Times expressed in its Oct. 13 editorial, "<a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/editorials/la-ed-armeniaturk13-2009oct13,0,4371572.story">Turkey and Armenia: reconciling history</a>," I believe that it's in both countries' interest to restore diplomatic ties and open their shared border. However, I cannot help but question the logic of The Times' appeal to Armenians and Turks to "get beyond" the issue of the Armenian genocide -- especially when the editorial board shares the concern of Armenians that the establishment of a commission to study the genocide is "simply a means for Turkey to continue denying history."

  9. IRAN, ARMENIA: Booze and relative freedom lure Iranians to Christian enclave to the north

    Babylon & Beyond
Landlocked and still recovering from the decades of Soviet rule and a war with Azerbaijan that quickly followed, Armenia may not be the world's most attractive vacation destination. But for those living in the neighboring Islamic Republic, it's a kind.......

  11. Turkey misses its chance with Armenia

VARTAN OSKANIAN is minister of foreign affairs of the Republic of Armenia.
ANKARA HAS LET a rare moment pass. Three weeks after the assassination of acclaimed Turkish Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, it appears the Turkish authorities have grasped neither the message of Hrant's life nor the significance of his death. In the...

  13. Armenia haunts the Turks again

HUGH POPE is the author of "Sons of the Conquerors: the Rise of the Turkic World." He lives in Istanbul.
IS THERE A CURSE hanging over Turkey? Each time the country achieves sustained development, something trips it up. This time it was the assassination on Friday of Hrant Dink, a newspaper editor, peacemaker and one of Turkey's most prominent Armenians....

  15. Our fraying alliance with Turkey

Turkish-American relations are in crisis. But the House resolution declaring the World War I-era killings of Armenians a genocide is only one cause -- and that's just a sideshow. Turkish-American relations have been deteriorating for years, and the root...

  21. NEIGHBORHOODS: Glendale

Glendale may be a consumer's paradise with its car lots and big-ticket shopping malls, such as the recently opened Americana at Brand, but a vibrant multicultural community dominated by a big Armenian population gives this area loads of intriguing local color and great cuisine -- especially an array of ethnic bakeries. (Note: It helps to come armed with a sweet tooth!)

  23. Not just genocide

We mark today the 93rd anniversary of the Armenian genocide. It is a dull number, 93. It is a good number to forget, or else to spend on old arguments, old parallels and that famous quote from Hitler who, pondering if he could get away with a Holocaust of...
