  1. 80-year-old aerial images show retreat of Greenland glaciers

Long-abandoned 80-year-old aerial photographs found in a Danish basement document the unexpectedly rapid response of Greenland glaciers to changes in average temperatures, researchers have found. The studies show that landlocked glaciers were melting faster in the 1930s than they are now, but that those extending into the ocean are melting faster now, a team headed by climatologist Jason E. Box of Ohio State University and graduate student Anders A. Bjork of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark <a href=&quot;http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/ngeo1481%20">reported</a> in the journal Nature Geoscience. "We've confirmed that glaciers are very sensitive indicators of climate," Box said.
